from the edge of oblivion. It tastes salty, like ocean water, and you are stunned to
discover that you’re lying on your back, sprawled on wet sand. Another breaker foams
around you with a hissing sound, the silken bubbles caressing your naked skin.
Pushing yourself up onto your elbows, you gaze at the series of waves rolling toward
you, expecting to see the wreckage of a ship bobbing up and down in the surf--a
beached hull, a broken mast, splintered lifeboats. But there’s no wreckage of any kind
out there. There’s only the churning surf and glittering stars ...
